The next time you are cleaning your windows, give them an inspection at the same time.  Here are some things to look for when assessing whether or not you need to be concerned about your windows and how you can tell when it might be time to replace them.

•     Condensation buildup.  You won't be able to miss this particularly during a regular window cleaning.  If a window is showing patches or sections of wet areas that aren't removed when you clean the glass but instead are trapped between the panes, it is quite possible that the seal within the window has weakened or broken and is no longer functioning as it should. 
•     Integrity of the frame.  Chipped paint (if an older wood window frame), blackened or stained areas around the edges of the windows or on the frames of the window itself.  The window being difficult to open and/or close, or close properly.  These are all indications that the windows are aging or not functioning as they are meant to.
•     Noise.  In a room that has several windows, or even a few, make note of any outside noises seeping into the home where the windows are located.  If the noise level is such that you don't need to open the window to talk to someone on the other side?  You might want to consider upgrading the window panes themselves or the entire window if current ones are aged or causing problems.
•     Distinct seepage of light coming through areas where there should be none?  In cool weather (or windy) using a lighter or other flame (always ensure the drapery is now where near the flame and that you are in control of the environment to ensure there is no danger to using this method) hold the flame near the edges of the window about 1/4" from the actual frame.  If the flame flickers due to wind making it through from the outside, you really have to have this issue addressed.  Otherwise, the money you put into your heating/cooling costs will be higher than they really need to be.
•     Age of the home and  age of the windows must be looked at.  Older homes with older windows will most definitely benefit from a window upgrade.  Spending money now to upgrade or replace your windows will save you money in the long run.
•    Esthetics and elbow grease.  Tired of chipping off and painting over wooden frames?  Although a fresh coat of paint can do wonders for tired looking wood, it really isn't necessary to continue to maintain your window frames this way.  Today's products are practically maintenance free and if you are tired of washing windows?  New windows today make doing so a lot easier and quicker simply because of the way in which they are made.

If any of the above is a problem for your windows, checking with a Reputable Window and Door replacement firm and having a 'visual Site inspection' completed will help you determine if or when your property's windows need replacing or repair.  

All window and door Companies are not the same and the quality of windows and doors can be very different from each other.  Some firms have a very strong track record and pay attention to the details as well as to the quality of the product and the level of performance when replacing/installing.  

Get at least 3 separate estimates from 3 reputable firms before signing on any dotted line or making a committed expense that may not be necessary.  Sometimes all it takes is a bit of know how and some materials to make an inefficient window work as it should.
